Step aboard the all-new Avalon Alegria, the first Avalon Waterways Suite Ship purpose-built for Portugal’s Douro River. Designed for intimacy, elegance, and cultural discovery, this beautifully appointed vessel sets a new standard for cruising through one of Europe’s most celebrated wine regions. With a name that translates to “happiness,” Alegria reflects its spirit throughout – from vineyard-lined hillsides drifting past panoramic windows to the sounds of fado at sunset. Carrying just 102 guests across four decks, it offers a relaxed, small-ship experience with stops in Porto, the Douro Valley, and historic riverside towns. Onboard, venues like the Sky Grill, Panorama Bistro, and glass-walled Dining Room highlight the flavors and character of Portugal.

Accommodations follow suit, led by 37 Panorama Suites with floor-to-ceiling windows that open seven feet wide, creating an open-air balcony feel. At the center of the ship, the Sky Deck features Avalon’s first-ever onboard pool, surrounded by loungers, shaded seating, and sweeping river views. In the kitchen, a Portuguese chef leads menus rooted in local ingredients alongside Avalon Fresh options and regional favorites. Christened in Pinhão in March 2024, Alegria marks a new chapter for river cruising on the Douro.
